It all started for her while driving through a busy junction, trying to turn left!

My wife was always ok with driving. It never bothered her at all. Then one day driving through town she was stuck on a busy junction trying to turn across oncoming traffic when it hit her.

She told me her throat just tightened and her heart started racing. She thought she was having a heart attack in the middle of a busy junction, what else could it be? .... click to watch a short video of just what it was!

The traffic cleared a bit and she managed to limp round the corner and pull over. Confusion was now the order of the day, she hadn't a clue what had just happened but knew she didn't want it happening again.

Where she was in town was less than a mile from our house so after taking a frantic call from her I ran to find her. Sure enough she was sat in the car and as white as a ghost. I was still a bit confused as to what had happened as her call was gibberish at best. I thought she'd hit & killed someone.

She started to explain to me as best she could and to be honest, and to my shame now, I just couldn't comprehend what she was trying to say. She said she thought her chest was going to explode and could hardly breathe. All sorts went through my mind, like heart attack or asthma attack but a panic attack was the last thing I would have expected.

My wife was always so level headed, she was the last person I'd pencil in for panic attacks. Later I would find out just how sudden these things can come on.

.....I learnt a good friend of mine started having them when he was pushing his first kid in a stroller. He was one tough guy as well and for him to admit that was surprising to me. He said they just came on almost overnight. He would be out with his kid and he said he used to get an immense sense of something bad going to happen, his heart raced he couldn't breath, he started sweating gallons. All for no reason....

I took my wife to see our doctor and she ended up with a handful of information sheets that looked suspiciously like they we just found & printed off of the net somewhere. She was informed it was totally irrational to panic about an -as yet- unmanifested danger. Nice one Doc'.

After a few words from me pleading to get some medication, the doctor agreed to put her on Beta-Blockers, these things supposedly stop your heart from racing and will lessen the panic attack. Slower heart rate should in theory stop an escalation. Isn't theory great?

Never seems to work out in practice though!

The long road to recovery (avioding the junction from hell)

We started off with me and my wife in the car, she would drive. We drove towards the same junction that had triggered the attack and to be honest she was fine until we got there. She was even pretty confident herself until we approached the devil junction. Then it hit her again. The Beta Blockers did indeed keep her heart from racing out of control but they did nothing else whatsoever.

My wife was in the grip of a panic attack albeit without her heart racing as bad as before. Now, let me tell you I don't suffer panic attacks but the nearest I came to one was in that car with my wife driving and trying to get through the junction while she was having an attack. I thought we were both toast. Luckily she limped through and we lived to fight another day.

We stopped her driving at all for about a year after that. As I was working at home anyway we went everywhere together. So it was logical for me to drive. We had a few test drives around town and it turned out that it was only that particular junction that caused it. She could drive ok anywhere else but not that junction. Not on her own though, she insisted I was with her in case it happened elsewhere. But that one junction was the trigger.

We were lucky in so far as I could devote the time to drive her around but heaven help us if I had been working away from home and she would rely on the car. She told me if that was the case she was going nowhere.

That's quite a frightening scenario being made almost housebound by anxiety and panic attacks that you have no control over.

We lived with it for a while but decided to fight back as the doctors were next to useless.

After visiting all sorts of doctors and specialists and shrinks we got no further forward. If I had a dollar for every time we were told it's all in her head, it's an irrational fear of nothing I could've hired her a driver!

I'm the internet geek in our house so I set out to learn as much as I could about this problem. What I learnt was eye opening to say the least. There's us thinking we were probably one in a million who suffered this problem when in reality it's widespread.

I joined forums and talked to other sufferers, some even had great results and had found a cure for it. I say cure but it's not really a disease, more like a puzzle, so it's probably more like a solution rather than a cure.

I visited lots of sites on the net giving exercises and information and we tried them all. We had varying results but nothing did the trick.

I will say she stopped taking the Beta Blockers shortly after learning they didn't help that much. It's pointless poisoning your body with stuff that is useless. I don't think any medication is going to help if you are having panic attacks. Education & understanding will help. It helped and solved our problem.

We were told to go check out a product called 'Panic Away', and it did just what it said on the tin! A guy called Joe Barry is teaching his own methods to stop panic attacks in their tracks. Without drugs or "alternative therapies" of any sort. He uses what he calls the "One Move Technique" and let me tell you it works, period.

It revolves around you learning to break the cycle. Learn to conquer the fear of another panic attack and it will not happen. There's a great quote from somewhere, maybe the bible, I dunno, but it goes something like this .......

...... "fear knocked on the door and when hope answered there was no-one there"

Basically, if you have hope you can conquer your fears.

I don't feel comfortable going into detail about his actual technique here as it's not my work or my ideas so that would be stealing Joe's stuff and that would be plain wrong. I can say it's nothing to do with hypnosis or any of that mumbo jumbo.

Anyhow we both owe Joe a huge debt of gratitude as even though it was only my wife having the panic attacks I (and our kids) were victims too.

If you really want to be free then checking Joe's site out is a must... click here to visit Joes' Panic Away site.
